Frequently Asked Questions

Is there phone service available at the house?
Yes, both houses have a traditional land-line for incoming calls, or outgoing calls using your own calling card. Some, but not all, cell phones from the US and Canada (and maybe other places) might work on the island, but they can be very expensive to use, especially to call out of the country. If you have any doubts, check with your provider before you get to the island.

Each house will include the use of a pre-paid Batelco cell phone; you can buy additional minutes at many of the local grocery stores, such as Burrows in Governours Harbor or directly from the Batelco office. Follow the simple instructions on the cards you purchase to add minutes to your phone.

The cell phone is great to have when you are exploring the island in case you break-down (make sure you bring the phone number of the person you choose to rent from!). Also keep in mind that while the phones work in many areas on the island, just like at home, they do not work everywhere.
Is the internet available?
Both house have high speed internet. It works great for surfing the web and checking your email but it will not be quite as fast or reliable as it maybe at home - so don't count on downloading movies from Netflix! Wireless internet available for a small fee at the Haynes Library in Governours Harbour and it is sometimes available for free at various restaurants, stores and gas stations.
Will I need a car on the island? If so, where can I get one?
You will almost definitely want to have access to a vehicle for most, if not all of your trip. While the beach directly in front of the house could keep you occupied for days, you eventually will want to explore some of the other beaches on the island - not to mentioned picking up food, water and other supplies.

There are no big car rental companies on the island like Hertz or Budget, but there are many small car rental agents that work out of each of the 3 airports on the island that can arrange to have a car waiting for you when you arrive. Check our 'Resources' page for the names and phone numbers of rental agents on the island.

You could take your chances and rent a car at the airport after you arrive, but it is highly recommended that you arrange this ahead of time.
How much will it cost to rent a car?
Plan on spending at least $65 to $80 per day for a decent vehicle. Also keep in mind that most cars you rent will have higher milage and a lot more wear and tear than if you rented a car at home - don't be surprised! It is nice to have a vehicle with high clearance and 4WD, but it is not absolutely necessary.
Car Rental Fuel Policy
Your rental car is supplied with a full tank of fuel and it must be returned with a full fuel tank. In case the rental car is not be returned with current amount of fuel, we might charge you the costs for the missing amount of fuel.

Yes, instructions on how to use the equipment are located in the Laundry room: Laundry and Dryer machines are located on the first floor of the house (for Garden of Light) and on the back of the house (for Desert Roses). It is good practice to use one machine at a time to avoid kicking a circuit breaker. Also, please clean sand from your bathing suits, clothes and towels with water using the external shower or the other available faucet before putting them into the washing machine. Sand and salt are very hard on the appliances. Beach towels will dry great if hung over the railing on any of the decks.
Where can I get fresh seafood?
You can often buy fresh fish, lobster or conch directly from the fisherman by the main intersection in Governours Harbour, the docks in Tarpum Bay or in Rock Sound and sometimes right off a beach you may be visiting. It is a matter of chance on being at the right place at the right time, but if you ask around you can usually find some for sale.
Where can I buy groceries?
There are a lot of small grocery stores scattered around the island including many right in Governours Harbour - as you are exploring you will find many more. From the house, Burrows in Governors Harbour is probably the most conveneient and has the largest selection. Please see a list of some of the stores on our 'Island Resources' page.

There are many restaurants on the island, and some will even occassionally have live music to enjoy. A few require (or at least prefer) reservations, so be sure to check ahead of time so you do not leave disappointed. See our resources page for a partial list of restaurants on the island.
Can we drink the water on the island?
While the water system has improved greatly over the years, most folks, especially visitors, choose to purchase bottled water instead. Your house will be furnished with a fresh 1 gallon jug of bottled of water , you will also find an empty 5 gallon jug that when you need,be sure to bring it with you to exchange for a new one ( $ 5) in order to avoid being charged an additional bottle deposit ( $8). All stores and gas stations have bottled water for sale.
Where can we get fresh fruits and vegetables?
While most grocery stores sell a certain amount of fruits and vegetables, if you want really fresh stuff, check out the 'Island Farm' right on queens highway, about 1-2 miles south of Palmetto Point. The have a large selection of the best fruits and vegetables grown right on the farm, and even fresh baked bread and other goodies. Not everthing is available everyday, so best to stop by early before they sell out for the day.
Do I need to know anything about using the kitchen appliances?
Each kitchen has a refrigerator, microwave, electric stove, oven and dishwashing machine. Instructions on how to use the equipment, should you need them, are located inside a cabinet door. It is a good practice to not use too many appliances at the same time in order to prevent tripping a circuit breaker.
How do we set use the air-conditioning system(s)
All the bedrooms and most of the other rooms each have an independent air conditioning system. Each A/C unit is controlled by a seperate remote control located near the the entrance each room. When you use the remote control it is a good practice to replace them in their respective storage compartment immediately after each use so that they do not get lost and do not get mixed up with the remote controls for the other rooms.

Please do not run the air conditioning with windows or doors open as this will waste electricity and may damage the system. Generally speaking, it is good practice to enjoy the ocean breeze with the windows open during the day and then cool down in the evening using air-conditioning if necessary. If you are leaving for the beach in the morning, please remember to shut-off the A/C and open the windows when you head out. Electricity is very expensive on the island, and we appreicate your helping us to conserve whenever possible.

Please try not to handle the remote controls (or any electronics for that matter) with wet or sandy hands.
